So,’ we are constantly asked, ‘you’ve written this book - who serves the best coffee in town?’
Apart from not wanting to play favourites, this is not a question we can answer honestly. And why can’t we, you may ask? Well because it all depends what we are in the mood for. This is also the luxury of what we have in Cape Town, the joy of having a coffee culture AND of having a long-lived sense of quirkiness and independence. No mall culture for us, no huge chains. And so there is, truly, a shop for every mood and every whim.
In the mood for cake and cossetting? Take your pick – there are many coffee shops with some killer cakes and treats on offer. Deadline you need to meet away from fighting kids/noisy neighbours/renovations (an occupational hazard in Cape Town) - you may pick somewhere completely different. Need to dream and contemplate the view – well you would be looking, probably, at the Atlantic Seaboard or False Bay. Or what if you have just had a fight with your bestie/your boyfriend/a colleague/your boss or, worst of all – SARS? You may crave anonymity, a place to lick your wounds and quietly people watch and eavesdrop to take you away from your own troubles.
What we can tell you is that 99% of the time the shops on The Coffee Route can offer you that perfect cuppa, that break in the day, that home-from-home feeling that just makes life feel a little better.
